I was surprised when our child said he wanted to acquire chickens.
All of us ended up getting some hens as well as a chicken coup. I asked about how to set up the coup as well as how to make it so the water didn’t freeze in the winter seasons… You basically have to have a bulb always working to give enough warmth for the water so that it will not freeze solid, otherwise the chickens will be in big trouble as well as starve to death. Other than that, they don’t need much warmth to make it through the Winter months. So long as they have a coup to shelter them from the elements as well as a small pad set at the right temperature control settings, they would be just dandy. The pad provides just enough heating to make it so they will not freeze, however the chickens are able to get through the Winter months surprisingly well. So the people I was with and I have been taking care of these chickens; feeding as well as cleaning up after them and giving them water. I frequently remind our kid to take care of these duties most of the time unless he is tied up finally working on a university project. I must say, he has done a pretty nice job being responsible with the chicken care as well as coup servicing work. I didn’t think he could handle it all, including gathering all the eggs that were laid. All of us have had some relaxing dinners in the evening though because the people I was with and I never have a shortage of eggs. Our kids even takes fresh eggs to all the neighboring houses as well and they are glad to pay cash for them which is going towards our daughter’s college fund. She told us she’s not totally sure she’s going to a traditional school though, she says she wants to be either a farmer or an advanced HVAC professional.
